After Reading Ken Calvert’s Questions and Answers

Issue Positions

For Presidential and Congressional candidates who refuse to provide voters with their positions, A very respectable company that I trust a lot has researched their public records to determine their likely responses. These issue positions are from 2016.

Abortion: Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?     Pro-Life

  • “I continue to believe that Planned Parenthood should not receive any federal taxpayer dollars for its disturbing practices. Surely Congress can and should provide funding for critical women’s health programs without having tax dollars go towards practices that many Americans find objectionable. Sadly, Senate Democrats and President Obama have placed a higher priority on protecting Planned Parenthood, than they have in protecting the unborn. Ultimately, I agree with National Right to Life that the long-term interests of those who value life and oppose Planned Parenthood are better served by avoiding a government shutdown and instead focusing on electing a pro-life President.”
  • Rated 100% by the National Right to Life Committee.
  • Rated 3% by the Planned PArenthood Action Fund.
  • Signed a letter stating: “We are grateful for the Trump Administration’s commitment to pro-life principles, and we certainly appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to your response.”

Budget: In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?     Does Not Support

  • Voted in favor of HR1 – Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
  • “I supported tax cuts because you deserve to keep more of your hard-earned money.” (www.calvertforcongress.com)

Budget: Do you support expanding federal funding to support entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare?     Does Not Support
  • “With the cost of living in California rising at an alarming rate and the baby-boom population reaching retirement, it is important that Congress take actions to protect current benefits and ensure long-term solvency of the Social Security program. I remain committed to working in a bipartisan manner to strengthen Social Security for current beneficiaries and future generations.”
  • “I voted against nearly $500 billion in cuts to Medicare that were included in the Obama and Pelosi supported government take over of health care. Medicare Advantage plans were cut by $132 billion, these plans are chosen by half of all Medicare beneficiaries in the 44th Congressional District. I will continue to fight these deep cuts to vital Medicare services.”
  • Rated 0% by Alliance for Retired Americans.
  • “There are a variety of proposals to address the unfunded liability of the Social Security system. Some plans seek to create voluntary individual retirement accounts to replace the current system, and others would retain part of the current system while adding individual accounts. I believe that younger Americans who want to move towards higher yield investments should have that option as long as today’s seniors and near seniors will not be affected by such a transition. I do not support the government investing Social Security funds in the stock market and I will never support legislation that would change current retirees’ benefits.”

Campaign Finance: Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?    Does Not Support
  • “H.R. 1, or the Democrat Politician Protection Act as it should be called, is a poorly disguised attack on free and fair elections in our country. The bill is an egregious attempt by Democrats to control Americans’ political speech and put their thumb on the scales of our elections.”
  • Rated 0% by Common Cause.

Crime: Do you support the protection of government officials, including law enforcement officers, from personal liability in civil lawsuits concerning alleged misconduct?      Unknown Position

  • “We can work to end racism, fight for equal justice, and demand accountability from law enforcement without defunding the police and jeopardizing the safety of our neighborhoods.” (twitter.com)
  • “Congress should send a strong message that those responsible for the death of George Floyd must be held accountable so that justice is served,” Calvert said. “We should also make it clear that defunding our police departments will make our neighborhoods less safe and significantly weaken our system of justice. I thank Rep. Steube for introducing this resolution.”

Defense: Do you support increasing defense spending?      Supports

  • “Our military budgets have been under strain for years due to the Budget Control Act. The approved agreement will help reverse funding trends that have degraded our military readiness, training and equipment to dangerous levels. After years of a budget driven strategy, our defense leaders will be able to plan, resource and execute the missions necessary to keep our country safe as well as protect our national interests around the world.”
  • “The primary responsibility of our government is the protection of our citizens and the only way to fulfill that mission is through a strong national defense. I support increased defense spending to reset the force, provide for our U.S. service members and to procure the necessary platforms that will replace aging weapons systems. We can provide for a strong defense through civilian workforce reforms, such as my bill the REDUCE Act (H.R. 340).”

Economy: Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?      Supports

  • “The REBUILD Act reduces the cost and time necessary to build infrastructure projects at a time when many California communities are struggling to find the resources necessary to construct them,” said Rep. Calvert. “For far too long we have allowed our regulatory red-tape to grow into a complex web that makes it too costly and time consuming to build adequate infrastructure. As a result, our communities are unable to upgrade their critical systems, jeopardizing public safety and thwarting economic growth.”
  • “After former President Obama and Democrats added an astounding $9 trillion to our national debt in eight years, we owe it to the American taxpayers to do everything we can to be good stewards of their hard earned dollars,” said Rep. Calvert. “The rescissions package approved today will not cure our significant fiscal challenges, but it does demonstrate that House Republicans are committed to cutting spending. I look forward to the House taking additional steps in tackling our fiscal challenges on both the mandatory and discretionary federal spending.”
  • Voted in favor of H.R.22 “Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act”

Economy: Do you support lowering corporate taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?      Supports
  • “I was proud to support one of the most consequential pieces of legislation that I have had the opportunity to vote on in my career. This legislation provides a direct path to higher wages and more jobs. The reduction of the corporate tax rate will bring jobs back to America and unleash the untapped potential of our entrepreneurs.”
  • “I support the following targeted solutions: simplify the tax code, lower the corporate tax rate, halt all job-killing regulatory proposals, reduce employer payroll taxes for newly-hired employees; make E-Verify – the only tool for employers to verify the legal status of potential employees – mandatory in all 50 states; and open global markets to American products.”

Economy: Do you support providing financial relief to businesses AND/OR corporations negatively impacted by the state of national emergency for COVID-19?    Supports
  • Voted in favor of HR 266 – Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act.

Education: Do you support requiring states to adopt federal education standards?     Does Not Support

  • “I fully recognize that the future of America is linked to the successful education of our children. While public education has traditionally been a right and responsibility of states and local communities, federal funding and control has increased over recent years. As a result there has been a growing debate on whether federal involvement in education, and the billions in federal spending that comes with it, is actually improving educational opportunity.”
  • “I support the reevaluation of the federal role in education and believe that federal policy must always balance the need for standards and accountability with the rights of students, families and teachers while preserving local control of K-12 education. And in a time of ever more tight budgets, where spending restraint is necessary to decrease the federal deficit, innovative and effective education policy must be the guiding principle.”

Energy and Environment: Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)?       Supports
  • “Federal incentives and coordinated research in developing energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies are a critical component of solving our energy problems. Furthermore, we must take advantage of the natural resources available to us here at home. Domestic energy production creates jobs and boosts our economy.”
  • Rated 100% by the American Energy Alliance.
  • “The recent drop in gas prices highlights the economic benefits of increased energy production right here in North America. Building the Keystone pipeline will increase access to more North American energy sources and further reduce our dependence on oil from the Middle East.”

Energy and Environment: Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?       Does Not Support
  • “The bill also protects our economy and American jobs by stopping a host of job-killing regulations that have become the hallmark of the Obama administration’s executive overreach. I’m proud to be at the forefront of the House’s efforts to stop President Obama’s harmful regulatory overreach that has created our stagnant economy.”
  • “I have and will continue to oppose efforts to impose harmful regulations, taxes and fines that will kill jobs in America and raise energy prices for hard working families. Economists across the board agree that cap-and-trade regulations would result in significant job losses and dramatic increases in gasoline prices. I will not place these additional burdens on my constituents.”

Guns: Do you generally support gun-control legislation?       Does Not Support

  • “Today, Congressman Ken Calvert (CA-42) issued the following statement in response to President Obama’s executive actions on gun control: “President Obama’s unconstitutional executive actions are now a trademark of his failed presidency. The President’s actions today go a step beyond his previous regulatory overreach by restricting constitutionally protected rights in a manner that itself is a violation of the policy-making powers the Constitution reserves for Congress. Americans are understandably concerned by any source of violence that may threaten them or their loved ones. I am once again disappointed that rather than having a meaningful conversation about the root causes of violence, President Obama is once again trying to restrict a fundamental, constitutionally-protected right. Whenever the President is done trampling on the Constitution, I would encourage him to work with Congress on issues, like mental health reform, where there’s broad support.””
  • “There are steps that both the Executive and the Congress can take to protect innocent Americans from an attack such as Las Vegas. There is simply no reason for someone to be able to modify a legal weapon to shoot like a machine gun. Bump stocks should never have been made legal and we must act quickly to ban them. I have agreed to sign a letter urging the ATF to reverse their 2010 ruling that allowed the sale of bump stocks and I am working with a number of Republicans and Democrats on a potential legislative solution as well. Protecting the rights of law-abiding American citizens while providing for the safety of our communities are not mutually exclusive goals.”
  • Rated 92% by National Rifle Association.

Health Care: Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”)?      Supports

  • “Despite the political drama in the Senate, we must not lose sight of the fact that Obamacare premiums continue to rise and health insurance providers are dropping out of exchanges across the country, leaving many Americans with just one option. The House acted to replace Obamacare with a system that would lower premiums and give Americans access to a broad array of quality plans. This problem is far too big to ignore. I urge Congress to continue working and find a path forward in order to provide Americans the relief they need and deserve.”
  • “My vote for the American Health Care Act fulfills a promise I made to voters to save them from the harmful effects far too many of them have experienced since Obamacare was enacted into law. The American Health Care Act lays the groundwork for delivering the health care system Americans deserve by dismantling one-size-fits-all Obamacare and puts in its place policies that will create sustainable, market-driven, patient-focused health care options.”

Health Care: Do you support requiring businesses to provide paid medical leave during public health crises, such as COVID-19?      Supports
  • Voted in favor of HR 6201 – Families First Coronavirus Response Act.

Immigration: Do you support the construction of a wall along the Mexican border?     Supports
  • “I believe we can provide robust funding for the wall while negotiating on other items important to the Majority and reopen the affected government agencies as soon as possible.”

Immigration: Do you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?      Supports

  • “First, I am wholeheartedly against amnesty. I believe it is inherently unfair to give legal status to those whose first actions were to break our laws.”
  • “A secure border can only be achieved by making it clear that anyone caught illegally crossing our border will be returned to their home country. A secure border protects Americans and will protect Central American and other children from being subjected to a long, dangerous journey.”
  • “Keeping American families safe is my top priority in Congress, which is why I believe deporting criminal illegal immigrants is so important,”

National Security: Should the United States use military force to prevent governments hostile to the U.S. from possessing a weapon of mass destruction (for example: nuclear, biological, chemical)?      Unknown Position
  • “We must keep Americans safe from all threats. I support confronting threats to our national security before they impact us at home.” (www.calvertforcongress.com)
  • “The U.S. must support our allies and hold our adversaries accountable for their actions and defend against rogue states with nuclear ambitions, such as Iran and North Korea . America must defend itself from a position of strength, not weakness and keep all options on the table to protect our homeland from attack.”
  • “Time and again Iran, Russia, and North Korea take actions that are a threat to America’s interests and those of our allies,” said Rep. Calvert. “The bipartisan sanctions packaged approved by the House today sends a strong message to these nations that there will be consequences for their actions. We simply cannot tolerate Iran, Russia, and North Korea taking continued provocative and dangerous measures.”

National Security: Do you support reducing military intervention in Middle East conflicts?     Does Not Support

  • “Ultimately, there are many threats across the globe beyond the terrorist threat posed by groups like al Qaeda: North Korea has nuclear weapons; Iran is rapidly developing a nuclear program; China is building its military and showed the world that it’s ready to wage war in space. Innumerable challenges lay ahead in the Middle East as well as other areas around the world will require long-term attention. However, the United States must maintain an ever-ready, flexible, and well-prepared military to respond to possible conflicts in several places around the world, even during times of extreme budget stress.”

Trade: Do you generally support removing barriers to international trade (for example: tariffs, quotas, etc.)?     Supports

  • “Farmers across the country, including California, face serious challenges: pests and disease, a shortage of water, regulatory burdens, and low market prices and unfair trade barriers. The government must address these problems as well as work to expand market opportunities and provide emergency assistance when appropriate and needed.”
  • Signed a letter stating: “American auto workers, parts suppliers and retailers, dealers, vehicle service providers, and millions of consumers depend on a healthy and competitive U.S. auto industry. As you know, this vital sector employs nearly four percent of our total private sector workforce and is a key engine that powers our economy. However, if tariffs were to be implemented, new vehicle prices will likely increase, threatening hundreds of thousands of jobs.”
